    Method

    Step 1: Heat 1 tbsp of oil and roast all the ingredients except asefoetida and coconut.
    Step 2: Remove from fire and allow to room temperature.
    Step 3: Place all these in the mixe with (asafoetida and fresh grated coconut) and grind into a coarse paste, adding by little water from time.
    Step 4: This quantity is enough to prepare sambar with 1 1/4 cubs of dhal.

  • Red chillies – 8 – 10
  • Coriander seeds – 2 tbsp
  • Bengal gram dhal – 1 tbsp
  • Red gram dhal – 1 tsp
  • Black gram dhal – 1 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds – 1 pinch
  • Turmeric Powder – a very small piece
  • Asafoetida powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Grated fresh coconut – 2 tbsp
