Dhal Bhath

Method

Step 1: Wash the dhal and add 2 cups of water with turmeric powder. Cook till the grain is just cooked but not pastey. Drain it in a water and reserve and the stock for later use.
Step 2: Chop onion and tomatoes. Dice potatoes and cut the drumsticks into 3 cm long pieces.
Step 3: Arrange the dhal on a plate. Add the tomatoes onions and potatoes with one tsp of chilli powder half of the cumin - garlic paste and salt to taste.
Step 4: Mix well and keep aside.
Step 5: Heat oil and seasonings with fenugreek seeds, fry for a few minutes then add the curry leaves and the remaining cumin paste.
Step 6: Add gram flour is well browned. Add the remaining chilli powder, dhania powder and reserved dhal water and stir it.
Step 7: Bring to a boil, add drumsticks and cook till they are done.
Step 8: Add tamarind extract and cook for a few minutes.
Step 9: Wash and cook the rice and drain in a water.
Step 10: Pour enough oil in a have based pat to cover the bottom of the pan, put a layer of rice in the pan, followed by the dhal mixture. Top with the remaining rice.
Step 11: Drizzle a little oil over it and cook till the rice is done.
Step 12: Serve hot with curry and pappad.

  • Rice - 2 cups
  • Thuvar dhal - 1 cup
  • Potatoes - 2
  • Tomatoes - 2
  • Onion - 1
  • Drumsticks - 2
  • Gramflour - 1tbsp
  • Tamarind pulp - 2 tbsp
  • Cumin &garlic paste - 1 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Chilli powder - 2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - A pinch
  • Dhania powder - 1 tbsp
  • Oil - 4 tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Curry leaves - 2 springs
