Spicy Yam Channa Curry

Method

Step 1: Soak channa overnight with a little (cooking soda) and enough water. Wash well before cooking.
Step 2: Peel yam cut into cubes.
Step 3: Pressure cook the yam, channa with turmeric powder till done.
Step 4: Heat oil, and fry the grated coconut till golden brown. Add ground mixture fry for few minutes.
Step 5: Add finely chopped tomatoes fry till it smells good
Step 6: Add the yam - channa. Mix the flour with little water to a smooth paste and salt together. Keep simmer for five minutes stirring constantly. Remove from fire.
Step 7: For tempering: heat oil, and season with mustard seeds curry leaves and black gram dhal. Pour the seasoning over the yam channa mixture.
Step 8: Garnish with coriander leaves serve hot with roties or puris
Step 9: Omit the flour in the above necipe and follow the same procedure.

Ingredients

  • Yam - 1/4 kg
  • White kabuli channa - 1 cup
  • Tomatoes - 2 (chop finely)
  • Fresh coconut - 3 tsp (grated)
  • Flour - 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Black gram dhal - 1/2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • A sprig of curry leaves
  • Oil for deep - frying
  • Salt to taste
  • Grind together

  • Grated coconut - 1/2
  • Red chillies - 7
  • Sesame seeds - 2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • A pinch of coriander leaves
